In 2024, In Darkness by Evis Sammoutis was released on the Kairos label. The recording features the Neue Vocalsolisten alongside bass clarinettist Gareth Davis and documents a work commissioned by Stichting Mousai in 2022. Drawing inspiration from John Dowland’s song In darkness let me dwell, Sammoutis uses the same text as a point of departure, developing it into a highly personal contemporary reflection. The piece explores themes of sadness, fragility, and resilience, shaped in part by the composer’s close experience with Parkinson’s disease. Through subtle transformations of vocal and instrumental sound, In Darkness offers a moving meditation on vulnerability, empathy, and human endurance.
